improving memory

The task of improving  memory started the day you were born and continues throughout your life. As you get older your memory seems to deteriorate. As recently as January 2012, researchers have found that this may start to occur sooner than we think.

Improving memory by reducing stress

There is no doubt that the most common reasons  people find themselves becoming more forgetful is because of stress. And it’s not just life changing stress that causes our memory to deteriorate. Most of us don’t realize how much of a toll daily irritations, hassles, and annoyances affect our memory. One way of improving memory is reducing your stress.

There are several reason why you may not remember as well when you’re under a lot of stress. The main one is in order to record information to form a memory, you have to be able to focus on the subject you want to remember. Anything that distracts you from paying attention, will impair your memory.

There is also evidence that in older people, their memory is affected if they are subjected to negative stereotypes.  Older adults will score lower on a memory test if they are told that older people do poorly on these types of test. This may be attributed to stress.  So if you’re looking at improving memory  and your health in general, reduce the stress in your life.

Improving memory through REM sleep

We know that getting lots of sleep is beneficial  to our overall health and our energy levels during the day. But sleep plays an important roll in improving memory. The benefits of sleep are well documented. research is showing that certain stages of sleep actually play important roles in people’s memory ability.

The REM (rapid eye movement) sleep stage, is where your dreams are most vivid and important for your memory systems. Rem sleep is important because  it pulls together all the information we process on a daily basis, and turns it into memories we use later. Having you maximize your sleep schedule to improve productivity and memory retrieval is key in improving memory.

Improving memory – try this

Experts agree that one of the most important ways of maintaining a sharp memory, is to engage in numerous  mental exercise.  What the brain does exceptionally well is communicate with its own cells. The more abundant and healthy the brain cell activity, then the faster the signals will travel back and forth. This results in a better mind and  memory.

Keeping the brain active with puzzles, riddles, games, and other challenging exercises helps build new connections between brain cells. It also improves those that already exist. Improving your memory with puzzles like Sudoku and cross word, or games like chess, help build these connections. Sitting and watching television, activates your sub conscious but does little to stimulate the connections or improving memory.

The way things are presented to you has an impact on how well you remember.  Humor and emotion can assist in memory retention. People tend to remember better if a subject is presented with humor, or they are subjected to some type of emotion. The funnier the joke, the more activity there is in your brain’s pleasure centers. This is why you remember certain food and beer commercials or Procter & Gamble’s Old Spice commercial.

The better you relate to something on a personal level the easier it is for you to remember it.  Too much stress will affect your memory as well as not enough REM sleep. However you can offset these affects by exercising your brain thus improving memory.
